It was time to go out for some libations after having a great dinner at a popular eatery on Wed. night.  It was agreed that we wouldn't stay out past sundown.  Oh , did I happen to mention that up here in the great north , the sun doesn't set until around 12:30-1:00 in the morning.  Our days have been getting progressively longer as the trip continues.  Sunup is around 5:30A.M.  Fairbanks should be our longest period of daylight on this trip.  It is West coast time in Whitehorse, two hours earlier than Chi-town.  Since it was a good time at a couple of local saloons, Thursday morning became a late sleep in.  A day off, what a pleasure not having to pack and get on the road.  The day was used for sightseeing and celebrating Joe's B-day.  We took a train ride along the Yukon river, visited the SS Klondike (a steam driven paddle wheeler used until the fifties).  Then we toured a local brewery, (Yukon Brewing Co., Their Golden and Ice Fog being our favorites), and caught a very entertaining vaudeville type show.  The show was called Frantic Follies and is what you would have seen in a western town like Whitehorse back in the late 1800's.

Whitehorse and the surrounding areas are best known for the Klondike Gold rush of 1898.  This area was overrun with tens of thousands of prospectors in it's heyday.  With the rush came the steamboats, the trains, and a lot of settlers.  Prior to that is was mostly fur trading.  Nowadays it is home to 75% of the population of Yukon and is their Capital.  Just for the record, we were back in the hotel around sundown.
